On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to all Ontarians of South Asian descent on the occasion of South Asian Heritage Month. I am also very pleased to join in recognizing May 5 as South Asian Arrival Day.
In December 2001, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario passed a bill proclaiming May as South Asian Heritage Month and May 5 as South Asian Arrival Day. Thanks to both events, we are afforded the
opportunity to reflect on the long-standing presence of Ontario’s diverse and dynamic South Asian community and on the many contributions it has made to the life of our province. South Asian Canadians have distinguished themselves in every sphere of endeavour and, in doing so, have made Ontario an even better place to live.
South Asian Heritage Month and South Asian Arrival Day also give Ontarians of all backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about the rich history, traditions and culture of our province’s South Asian
Please accept my best wishes for a memorable celebration.
