On behalf of the Government of Ontario,
I am delighted to extend warm greetings to all Ontarians as we join the international community in celebrating the legacy of Nelson Mandela — a freedom fighter, leader and nation-builder.
Today, on Nelson Mandela International Day, let us remember the extraordinary story of a man and a hero who helped end apartheid in South Africa. After nearly three decades of incarceration by the apartheid regime, he emerged from prison as a peacemaker, conciliator and nation builder who tirelessly sought common ground for his divided country. He helped South Africa move away from its apartheid past and look to the future through forgiveness and reconciliation.
Among the many wise words and gracious acts he left us is this quote:
“It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build.”
Let us take this day as an opportunity to commit to making a difference in our communities, to changing the world for the better, and to inspiring change in the next generation of leaders.
Please accept my best wishes for meaningful celebration.
